One of the many wonderful things about Indonesia is the amount of Bamboo that grows so wildly all over the country. After walking around a hot spring and seeing an abundance of bamboo, I carefully took from the ground a hand full of shoots to take back to my hosts home.

Here with some help from the family also, we made bamboo straws by cutting, sanding the edges and boiling in water. . . I also used wire to clean the inside.

It was incredibly easy and fast to make.

After, I left the straws with the family and gave them to the children.

There is a local coconut hut across the road from the family’s house where I went regularly. Here many people take the natural coconut, pour the water into a plastic bag with a plastic straw to take away.

For people living a fast paced lifestyle maybe the coconut is inconvenient in size and weight for riding on a motorbike, in which case, reusable bottles would be ideal, and of course reusable straws.

Though for the children living across the road and in the village, they do this every day, as they are not aware of the plastic pollution. This is a very normal purchase around all of Asia.

Sometimes people don’t know that they can being their own cups or bowls to these mini snack huts. The habits of the world have changed by the industry . . the throw away/ single use life style is destroying our oceans. Now we need to start changing our habits for a better world.

It starts with education, the rest is up to each individual to make these small changes.
