This would not be a true package free blog if I didn’t mention the amazing environmental breakthrough that is . . The menstrual cup!!! This little cup is a true gem in every sense of the word. In terms of hygiene, function and of course the reduction in packaging/material waste.

Say goodbye to boxes, wrapping, plastic wrappers, papers, towels, strings and tampons. Turns out one little cup is all you need and its so wonderful and simple to use.

I heard about the menstrual cup many years ago and thought it was such a great idea, however I was nervous that it wouldn’t work or it would be uncomfortable. .

Just last year I finally decided to invest a measly £22.20 on a moon cup from the real foods store and was so annoyed that I didn’t buy it sooner!

A Brief Description …

A menstrual cup is a little bell shaped vessel with a stem at the bottom that collects menstrual blood instead of absorbing it like a tampon or pad. It has tiny holes below the rim to create a suction seal once inserted in the vagina. Once it collects blood, it is removed, emptied and then re-inserted.

Of course I’m not going to lye, at first it takes some getting used to. You’re introducing something new into your body, but the cup is as comfortable as a tampon if not more so. You may feel a little uncomfortable for a bit after you insert it for the first time, but that feeling will go away and you won’t even know it’s there. If it’s making you feel uncomfortable, it could be because you haven’t inserted it right. Oh and you never have to worry about rashes and chafing like with pads. You can even swim with it!

They generally come in two sizes, one pre-childbirth and one after. Usually depending on the brand, your menstrual cup comes with a little pouch to keep it safe. You only have to empty your cup probably twice a day, it literally saves so much hassle and it will last you a few years so well worth the investment!

Does the fact that you have to take it out when it’s filled with blood and wash and reinsert it make you a bit squeamish? Well it shouldn’t! The pros definitely outweigh the fact that you find it a bit gross:

  • You can insert them in the morning and forget about it till evening, without worrying about changing it like with pads and tampons.

  • You don’t need to worry about disposing of it every time you need a change.

  • They hold more liquid than tampons.

  • They are Eco-friendly since you’re not eliminating waste into the environment like with tampons and pads/

  • They are made from medical-grade silicone and don’t interfere with the vaginas self-cleaning functions like tampons.

  • Traveling and sleeping is made much easier as you don’t need to worry about leakage or changing your pad or tampon every few hours.

  • You don’t need to remember to carry tampons/pads in your purse anymore.

Just keep it clean, sterilize before and after a period.

You’ll never go back once you’ve tried it.

Any questions please don’t hesitate to ask, I feel very passionately about these little cups.

Thanks for reading!
